This is because due to evolution, the chicken species had to have first evolved before it is capable of producing eggs of it's own species. What actually happened was some other bird slowly began to evolve into what we know as a chicken, and simultaneously, the egg of this unknown bird species was slowly evolving into what we know as a chicken egg. BUT eggs are pretty much 'copies' of the animals DNA, (so a chicken produces a chicken egg, a half-chick produces a half-chicken egg). So therefore the chicken had to have evolved before it was capable of producing a chicken egg. BUT if the last mutation that occured to make this chicken-like animal into a modern chicken occured TO THE EGG ITSELF, the egg evolved first.
